Mei-hwa Spinning Top Museum, Taoyuan County
Mei-hwa Elementary School is located in Daxi Township’s Meihua Village, in a remote part of Taoyuan County. The school has only six classes, totalling around a hundred students. Beginning in 1998, in line with the local government drive for each school to set up a distinctive activity, our school has been striving to pass on local folk customs and preserve traditional activities in the school. At Mei-hwa our special activity is playing with spinning tops.
Under the school’s enthusiastic guidance, the children have been participating in spinning top activities and have been learning all kinds of very difficult skills. In recent years, the students have been invited to participate in several events and competitions, and their performances have received acclaim from spectators and have been reported in the print media and on television.
Mei-hwa Elementary School’s spinning top museum was established with the support of the Ministry of Culture and the Taoyuan County Government’s Department of Cultural Affairs in order to further promote this excellent, traditional folk pastime and preserve the traditional toy. The museum began to operate in 2007. With a collection of more than a thousand spinning tops of different materials, styles and sizes, it is at the forefront of spinning top culture.
